We use Organic cotton fabrics and natural dyes and natural inks for our t-shirts.
Natural Inks used on 100% OLI & KUBO T-shirts are made from Ketapang leaves which are manually screen-printed onto the garments.
Ketapang leaves, sourced from Indian almond trees, are used in our Natural Ink screen-printing.
Any dye, either synthetic or natural that is improperly applied will run, streak, rub off or fade. Natural dyes perform comparably to synthetic dyes in both washing and lightfast tests. The subtle highs and lows that come from natural dyes are considered part of their beauty and distinguish them from synthetic.
Many of the colours come from agricultural by-products so that farmers are able to realise additional revenue from more of their harvest. Indigo is a legume and may be planted in rotation, enabling a farmer to grow a cash crop while enriching the soil. Natural dyes are a renewable resource and markedly different than synthetic dyes, which come from petrochemical extraction sources.

The subtle highs and lows that come from natural dyes are considered part of their beauty and distinguish them from synthetic. We recommend to handwash with pH-neutral soaps (baby shampoo can work well), because different pH values can cause the colour to change. The natural dyed tees can be washed in both cold and warm water; usually it is recommended for natural dyed products to wash in cold water, but from our experience warm water does not make a difference..
Certified Organic Cotton has a notably lower carbon footprint, using less fuel, waterand energy to produce. Certified Organic farming is safer for workers on cotton plantations, avoiding exposure to harmful chemicals. Certified Organic Cotton promotes a sustainable supply chain. We use Organic cotton fabrics for our t-shirts. This is certified by GOTS (please visit http://global-standard.org for more information about certification from GOTS)
We’re committed to sourcing the most sustainable product as possible, from the dyes we use, the fabrics we source and the farmers we support. However, there’s one area we’re working on improving, which is the process of preparing the screens. Currently the screen printers still need to use chemicals to prepare the film for the screen. There is no other option for this available in Indonesia as yet. Our supplier is committed to continually researching new ways of procuring sustainable screens and their goal is to find a way to be able to create screens with natural materials in the future. This is a project that is still in process so watch this space.
